About the blog and learning outcomes

Learning outcomes

According to Bloom's taxonomy terms, as cited below.

By taking the English course for Brazilians with teacher Gabriele, in the form of private classes, students should be able to demonstrate their achievement of the following learning outcomes:
  • Express their ideas in English in speaking form;
  • Express their ideas in English in written form;
  • Interpret various types of texts written in English, such as books, newspaper articles, e-mails, academic texts, recipes etc;
  • Recognize, identify and understand people speaking English in various situations, such as in a lecture, phone call, movie, song etc;
  • Use the language to communicate effectively in various real-life situations.
The use of this blog aligns with the curriculum for it helps students achieve the learning outcomes listed above:

- Expressing themselves orally (asynchronously), when recording videos to be posted in the blog;

- Expressing themselves in written form, when creating and posting a blog entry and when commenting on their colleagues' posts;

- Interpreting texts, when reading their colleagues' posts;

- Understanding when people speak English, when watching their colleagues' videos.

This specific technology - blog - was chosen by the teacher after consideration of the following matters:

- access to technology: easy access upon subscription and logging into the platform;

- cost: none. Having and participating in a blog in Blogger is free;

- skill level required: all students are familiar with how a blog is organized, some have had personal blogs in the past. Creating a post presents no big challenges to them either, since the post-creator resembles any text editor (such as Word), which they are also familiar with;

- accessibility: all students have easy access to the Internet at home. The fact that the blog is an asynchronous resource facilitates its use if they do not have Internet connection available at a certain moment (due to power shortage or connection failure, for example) because they can take part in the blog at any time;

- how the online experience of the student would be supported from a technical perspective: the teacher is available to solve any questions they might have. For that, students should simply send the teacher an e-mail, which will be answered in 24 hours maximum. There's also a section in the blog which has links to YouTube tutorials on how to post in Blogger.
